Under the supervision of the Executive Pastor, the Minister to Children plans, conducts, and evaluates a comprehensive Children’s Ministry (CM) that focuses on the spiritual growth of children along the First Baptist Church of Woodbridge (FBCW) 4D Discipleship Pathway. The Children’s Minister ministers to children from birth through 6th grade and their families.  While CM tasks are the primary responsibility, the Children’s Minister will also work in concert with the FBCW staff and be available to assist other staff members when needed on projects and tasks unrelated to the CM. Staff members at FBCW foster and adhere to a teamwork model in order to accomplish our mission and have a greater impact on the entire church.


  • Provides Opportunities for Spiritual Growth

    • Develops a clearly defined vision and strategy for discipleship within CM that works in conjunction with FBCW’s overall vision and ministry.

    • Provides a specific vision for the process of children’s spiritual growth that is in line with and traceable to the FBCW 4D Discipleship Pathway.

    • Builds, mentors, and develops the CM Leadership Team, which consists of both paid staff and committed volunteers.

    • Evaluates the effectiveness of the ministry, special events and collaborates with the Executive Pastor, CM teachers, CM staff, CM volunteers, and other church leaders to identify and quantitatively measure areas of success and needs for improvement.

    • Develops comprehensive long and short-term plans of discipleship, service, strategy, and evangelistic activities to progress children along the 4D Discipleship Pathway.

    • Develops and implements strategy for whole-family discipleship; working with families to equip and empower parents/families to disciple their children.

    • Builds relationships with children that enables the Minister to Children to mentor and encourage student progress along the FBCW Discipleship Pathway.Mentors Sunday school teachers and small group leaders on building relationships with children that encourages progress along the 4D Discipleship Pathway.

    • Provide oversight and planning for all aspects of Children’s Ministry programming, including:

      • Sunday morning Children’s Discipleship programming/worship

      • Wednesday night programming

      • Specialized classes

      • Outreach events

      • Family events/programming

      • Summer camps

      • Vacation Bible School

    • Works in cooperation with the Student Ministry as a Next Generation team.

  • Delivers Biblical Education Program

    • Plans discipleship/education classes and activities for Sunday School, Wednesday night activities, and special events as appropriate for each age level of children.Prayerfully considers, evaluates, and selects Christian education topics, series, curriculum, resources, etc.

    • Works with the Student Minister to develop a plan for transitioning children from the 6th grade into the Student Ministry.

    • Develops and executes strategies to actively recruit and train CM Sunday school teachers, small group leaders, and other lay staff as required to deliver quality Bible based education programs for the children of FBCW.

    • Provides clear direction to CM leaders to ensure that the ministry is being run safely, efficiently, and effectively. If day-to-day ministry positions cannot be filled at any given time, develops plans to increase recruiting efforts and to carry out the ministry with limited staff in the interim.

    • Develops strategies and metrics to evaluate the quality of the Biblical education program and the progress of students; reports results to Senior and Executive Pastors with recommendations on how to improve when needed.

    • Monitors teaching activities of lay teachers to evaluate effectiveness and provide remedial training as necessary.

    • Provides spiritual shepherding to CM lay leaders, teachers, and staff.

  • Ensures Effective CM Administration

    • Ensures FBCW policies and procedures to safeguard children are in place, understood, and being followed by students, teachers, small group leaders, and other CM lay or paid staff at all times.

    • Coordinates annual CM budget with the Executive Pastor that are tied to the Strategic Vision of FBCW; employs budget per approved plan; identifies any shortfalls and develops recommendations for remediation.

    • Represents CM to the church staff at meetings and other occasions as directed by the Executive Pastor or Senior Pastor.

    • Provides supervision of the Checkpoint / ACCESS ACS system:

    • For CM programs to include (but not limited to): Sunday School, Mid-week programs, Special events.

    • Works with CM administrative assistant to handle CM attendance records, data and CM member records, event reservations & registrations and provides ministry reports as requested.

    • In conjunction with the IT Director, maintains Checkpoint & ACCESS system and associated supplies.

    • Serves as the primary manager / supervisor for all paid CM staff to include, but not limited to, the CM Kids Associate and the CM Administrator

    • Drafts and updates CM staff position descriptions, vets candidates, conducts interviews, makes hiring recommendations to the Executive Pastor when vacancies arise.

    • Works with paid CM staff to set specific, attainable, and measurable goals, provides feedback on goal attainment and overall performance.Responsible for holding staff accountable for performance of duties.

    • Provides professional development opportunities to increase the education and experiences of CM staff through classes, seminars, conferences, service, and leadership experiences.

    • Supervises, recruit, trains, schedules, and empowers the CM Greeter Team (Sun mornings/Wed nights/Special Events)

    • Needs to be well informed and knowledgeable on all CM activities in order to provide accurate information to visitors, members, and volunteers about the program.

    • Needs to ensure safe, consistent, and time-efficient check-in and check-out procedures for the following programs: Sunday School, Wednesday Night Activities, and Special Events

    • Needs to provide appropriate tracking and follow up of visitors and member attendance

    • Plans and leads the weekly CM staff meeting and all volunteer training.

    • Coordinates with the Administrative Assistants on event scheduling, facility requests, room assignments, office equipment, and supply usage for the CM.

    • Coordinates with the Communications Coordinator on publication submissions for the church newsletter, bulletin, social media, and the church website.


  • Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner that glorifies Christ and furthers the mission and ministry of FBCW.

  • Protects the reputation of FBCW for Christ-likeness, compassion, moral purity, professional competence, financial integrity, and confidentiality

  • Meets with the Executive Pastor as required.




  • A Bachelor’s degree in a field that will contribute to the successful execution of the position’s responsibilities is required.

  • BA or BS degree in Christian Education, Christian Studies, or a similar area with a focus on Children’s Ministry is preferred. Post-baccalaureate certificates from accredited Christian universities in these or similar areas will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • M.A/M.Div. in Children’s Ministry or Christian Education is highly desired.



  • Post-baccalaureate practical training in understanding, evangelizing, and discipling children is highly desired.



  • Previous experience with increasing levels of responsibility for leadership in a Children’s Ministry is required.

  • 3-5 years experience as a professional (paid) member of a church staff leading paid and volunteer staff in Children’s Ministry is preferred.



  • Deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ, unquestionable character and integrity with a demonstrable vital and growing walk with the Lord through committed Bible study, prayer, and meditation.


  • Become a member of FBC Woodbridge, agree to the FBCW affirmation of faith, and participate enthusiastically in church opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship.


  • Performance reviews will be conducted in accordance with church personnel policies and procedures.
